The Cultural Space 'The Canned' to become an international reference Ceutí contemporary art (12/03/2009)

The new museum space will host exhibitions of their own production and compete with the best museums on the national scene

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, next to the Director General for Cultural Promotion, Antonio Martínez, and Fernando De Retes architect, today introduced the new cultural programming 'La Conservera' before Ceutimagina, which aims to "make one of the contemporary art spaces in Europe, "said the counselor, who also presented the programming of Visual Arts Space (VAS) since May this year until February 2011.

Contemporary art space 'The Canning', which will open next May 15 will be divided into four zones, which allow you to program four exhibitions of his own production.

Cruz explained that the reference is "the museum that works well in Spain, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), so we want to compete with him and at least live up to them."

The counselor explained that the factors that have been followed for programming is "the desire to flee the 'star system' of contemporary art, predictable in their names and a commitment to young artists and abroad, with critical recognition and have participated in major biennial exhibitions even though the curriculum still be a risky bet. "

Another criterion is that the samples "have common elements of discourse that make the journey is continuous and that will discuss various current issues, from different voices and perspectives."

In addition, all artists "will perform a mixture of traditional artistic expression, so that the painting, sculpture and photography will be joined on the premises of these artists.

The charge of Culture had an impact on 'The Canning' "will not be another space, but the axis against which other areas will be identified from the Department of Visual Arts.

With these guidelines, 'The Canning' was created with the aim of becoming "one of the spaces that are going to talk more in the Spanish context and that will make Ceutí an international reference," said Cruz.

'The Canning' will set up a teaching that will address all activities related to both space Ceutí itself as all the activities undertaken by the Ministry in relation to the visual arts.

Retes, the architect for the renovation of the exhibition space of Ceuta, said the building "will suffer some slight changes based on the principles of sustainability and silence, as it is built on a former factory on which it has taken a new skin that hides part of the old volumes. "
